Women In Technology: Issues & Answers
On March 25, 2008, the Atlanta chapter of WITI (Women In Technology International), hosted a panel
discussion on "Women In Technology: Issues & Answers," discussing current key topics for women in
technology. Some of the areas covered in the discussion were career advancement, retention and
work/life balance. The panel was comprised of several CIOs and executives from Atlanta. The event
was a great success and a fun evening. As noted in the discussion, for the last 20 years there has
been a concern about the lack of women entering the IT industry. Gartner predicts that by 2012, 40
percent of women in the IT workforce will leave traditional career paths. Three main areas of concern
were noted by Gartner: 1. The number of women entering the profession is too low; 2. There is a serious
problem retaining women who do enter the industry; and 3. There is too little retaining of women who
want to return to the industry. One interesting discussion was whether women should act more like men
in business and play golf to help them advance. Some of the women panelists felt that playing golf
and participating in male-oriented activities helped to level the playing field for them. The
consensus, however, was that women bring many important qualities and skills to the workforce,
such as strong communication and relationship building skills." It is just those qualities", as
noted by Ken Rabun, CIO of Manhattan Associates, "that make them a great asset."
